John Doench was born in Massachusetts and raised in New Jersey, so he loves both the Red Sox and Springsteen. He attended Hamilton College in upstate New York, majoring in history and biochemistry. He then received his PhD in biology from M.I.T. in the lab of Phil Sharp, studying the specificity and mechanism of microRNAs. In the Harlow lab, John is interested in using shRNA screens to find novel ways to target genes essential for cancer, currently with a focus on melanoma.
